Installing System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012

In this post I will go through the steps required to install the newest edition of System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM).

SCVMM 2012 is key to Microsoft’s policy of managing your virtual environments and includes management for not only Hyper-V hosts but also for VMware and Citrix hosts too!

It is also brings closer the Microsoft vision of ‘IT as a Service’ (ITaaS) and links seamlessly with the other System Center products to provide automation, monitoring, deployment and management of your virtual environment.

Taken from the Microsoft System Center blog:

System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2012 delivers industry leading fabric management, virtual machine management and services deployment in private cloud environments.

I've decided to write about this to tie in with the start of the new Microsoft Private Cloud Community Evaluation Program.

You can sign up for the Private Cloud CEP from the link below:

https://connect.microsoft.com/site799/program7383

To begin the installation, download the SCVMM 2012 Release Candidate from the link below:

Once you have downloaded the media, extract it and then right mouse click on the ‘setup.exe’ application and select ‘Run As Administrator’ to begin the install

From the splash screen below, click on the ‘Install’ option to continue

Now select the features of SCVMM 2012 that you wish to install and then click ‘Next’

Enter product information and then click ‘Next’

Accept the licence and then click ‘Next’ again

Choose whether or not you want to join the CEIP and then click ‘Next’

Select your installation location and then click ‘Next’

At this point, the installer will check that all of the pre-requisites are installed. If there are any pre-requisites missing then the installer will attempt to install them. If any of the pre-reqs can’t be automatically installed, the installer will notify you of what you need to do to continue and pass the check

Now enter your SQL server name and select the instance that you wish to deploy the SCVMM database into. I've chosen a remote SQL 2008 R2 instance on a separate physical SQL server that is not on my Hyper-V cluster (not a great idea to manage a Hyper-V cluster environment from within the Hyper-V cluser environment itself!)

In the next step, select either a Local System Account or a Domain account and input the relevant details if applicable. If you wanted to make your SCVMM installation highly available, you will need to select the ‘Store my keys in Active Directory’ option and provide the Active Directory location that you want to store the keys. In this example, I’m only installing SCVMM as a standalone install so will leave this box unticked

Leave the ports below at their defaults and then click ‘Next’

In the screen below, you need to specify your Self-Service Portal configuration information and then click ‘Next’

At the ‘Library Configuration’ window, choose to create a new library or to use an existing one but keep in mind that you should choose a location that sits preferably on some cheap storage that has a lot of free disk space as this is a great feature of SCVMM to allow you to store VHD and Machine templates but uses up a lot of storage and you don’t really want it sitting on your expensive SAS arrays on your SAN!

Finally, review the Installation Summary and if all information is correct, then click ‘Install’

When the installation is completed, you should see the window below confirming all was installed successfully!

Leave the ‘Open the VMM console when this wizard closes’ option ticked and then click on the ‘Close’ button to open up your newly installed SCVMM 2012 console and server

Once you have your SCVMM 2012 installation working, it's time to start managing your virtual environment and to begin thinking of your internal IT applications as holistic 'Services' instead of 'piece meal' components that are spread randomly throughout your estate!
